what a web designer costs: day rates, project fees and what you get

the price of a web designer is not one number, because "web designer" is not one job. it can mean someone who picks a template and fills it, someone who designs an interface and hands it to a developer, or someone who does both and ships the site. the third one costs more per day and less per project, which is the part that confuses the comparison.
the three ways designers charge
- hourly — 30 to 90 euro an hour in italy, depending on experience and city. honest for small changes, dangerous for a whole site: you cannot budget what you cannot see.
- day rate — 250 to 700 euro a day for a freelancer. useful for workshops and audits, where the scope is genuinely open.
- per project — the normal way for a website. the designer carries the risk of the estimate being wrong, and prices that risk in.
per project is usually the best deal for you, provided the scope is written down. an hourly designer who underestimates is not cheaper; they just invoice you for their optimism.
what the number includes
a project fee covers discovery, wireframes, one visual direction and a number of revisions, then the build or the handoff. it does not usually cover copywriting, photography, illustration, custom icons, or the third round of "actually, can we try blue".
those are not scams. they are different jobs. a designer who writes your copy is doing two jobs and should say so; a designer who silently uses lorem ipsum until launch is doing one job badly.
realistic ranges
for a small business site, design only, in italy: 800 to 2,500 euro. design plus build: 1,500 to 3,500 for five to eight pages. a brand identity with logo, type, colour and a small guideline: 800 to 3,000. a landing page with one clear offer: 400 to 1,200 euro.
these are planning ranges, not a price list. the biggest variable is not talent, it is how much thinking you have already done.
the question that reveals the price
ask: "what do you need from me, and by when?" a designer with a process answers specifically — texts by week one, photos by week two, one decision-maker for approvals. a designer without a process answers "just send me whatever you have", which is how a four-week project becomes a four-month one.
and ask who owns the files: the figma, the domain, the hosting, the repository. if the answer is "we keep everything", the price you are comparing is not the price of leaving.
how this relates to the site
a designer's fee is one line in the total cost of owning a website, not the whole bill. the other lines are hosting, maintenance and the content you will keep producing. what a website costs in parma has the full picture for this area.
faq
how much does a web designer cost in italy?
freelancers charge roughly 30-90 euro an hour or 250-700 a day; a small business site designed and built is usually 1,500-3,500 euro. agencies are higher because you are also paying for account management and overhead.
is a cheap web designer a bad idea?
not automatically. a cheap designer with a clear process and a portfolio you can click is a good deal. an expensive designer who cannot show a live site is not.
should i pay by the hour or per project?
per project when the scope is clear, hourly for audits and small changes. the worst combination is hourly with an unclear scope: you pay for the exploration and the indecision.
