what is a domain name? the deed, the address and the yearly bill
web · Aug 5, 2026 · 4 min read
a domain name is two things at once, and separating them explains everything else about it: it is the address people type (yourbusiness.com) and the deed of ownership for that address, renewed yearly. the address part is what visitors see. the deed part is where things go right or badly wrong.
the address, and why the name matters more than the technicalities
the domain is the one piece of your online presence that appears everywhere: on cards, invoices, signs, email addresses, google searches. rules that have aged well:
- short, sayable, no explanations needed. if you must spell it on the phone twice with “double l” caveats, the name costs you business silently.
- .com or your country. (.it in italy) first. the exotic extensions (.biz, .online, .shop) cost less and read less credible to the exact strangers you want.
- your business name beats clever names. the domain is how repeat clients and referrals find you again; being findable by the name they remember beats being clever once.
the deed: where the domain is registered matters more than the price
first year prices are marketing: 1-10 euro to lure, 10-25 euro to renew, depending on extension. the price is not the point. what matters is three properties of the registrar (the company that holds the deed):
- you own it, in your name. the registrant must be you or your business — not the cousin who “helped”, not the first freelance. i have seen businesses nearly lose their name because a domain was registered by an ex-employee with a personal account.
- you can leave easily. transfer to another registrar should be documented, unlocked with two clicks, and take days not weeks. lock-in is a red flag about everything else the company does.
- the renewal is the real bill. the domain is not a one-time purchase: it is a subscription. let it lapse and the address can be bought by anyone — including resellers who then charge you a fortune, or strangers who point it at whatever they like. auto-renew on, card valid, expiry in your calendar.
the deed matters most moving house. a domain that is yours transfers cleanly to any new hosting, any new builder, any new developer. a domain rented by whoever built your site is the chain that ties you to them. written more fully in the ownership part of can i just use facebook instead of a website.
what a domain is NOT
not the hosting (the land the house sits on — where your files actually live). not the email (a service that uses the address). not the website (the thing visitors see). people conflate these because they are billed together sometimes, and the conflation is why people “loose their website” when they really lost access to one of the three. who has which login for which piece: one page, written down, kept current — that list is the deed to all of it.
FAQ
do i need multiple extensions (.com and .it)?
one honest one to start (.com or .it). add the second later if confusion between them happens in practice, not because a registrar upsold “brand protection” for twenty extensions you will never type.
should the domain and hosting be the same company?
convenient, not necessary — and many keep them deliberately separate so that leaving one never takes the other with it. whatever you pick: you keep the logins.
what happens if i stop paying?
a grace period, then release. after release anyone can register it, and recovering a registered-away domain ranges from expensive to impossible. the yearly bill is small; the lapse is not.
the closing thought
the domain is the cheapest part of your online presence and the one that outlives every rebuild, redesign and change of developer. treat it like the deed it is: in your name, auto-renewed, and never held hostage by the person who “set it up for you”.
