the seo audit i did in 2025, before google's november core update hit

i ran a full seo audit on this site in early 2025, before google's november core update. i wanted to know what was actually working, what was not, and what i should fix before the update hit — not after.
what i audited
i started with the three things that matter most and are most often skipped: indexing, relevance, and trust. indexing: are the right pages indexed and the wrong ones excluded. relevance: does each page answer the query it targets better than the alternatives. trust: does google have a reason to believe this site is worth showing.
for indexing i checked the sitemap, the robots.txt, the canonical tags, the noindex flags, the internal link structure, and the search console coverage report. for relevance i read every page against its target query. for trust i checked the backlink profile, the content depth, the technical hygiene, and the local signals.
what i found
the good news: the site was indexed cleanly, the technical basics were in place, and the content was real — no filler, no doorway pages, no keyword stuffing. the bad news: several pages targeted queries they could not win, some internal links pointed to pages that no longer existed, and a few pages had duplicate content issues from old translations that had not been cleaned up.
the surprising news: the single biggest improvement came not from a technical fix or a content rewrite, but from consolidating three thin pages into one. three pages each targeting a slightly different version of the same query, each with little depth, became one page with real depth. the combined page outranked all three originals within two months.
what survived the update
the november core update did not change which fixes mattered — it changed which pages got hurt. thin pages with weak relevance got pushed down. pages with real depth and clear intent held steady or improved. the consolidation fix survived and strengthened. the technical fixes — canonical, indexing, internal links — mattered before the update and mattered after, because they are prerequisites, not levers.
the lesson: do the technical basics well, then invest in depth on the pages that target queries you can actually win. everything else is noise.
the checklist i rebuilt
the audit produced a checklist i now run before launching any page: indexing first, relevance second, trust third. the details are in seo checklist 2024 and the reasoning behind each item is in what is seo.
i run the checklist in that order every time, because the order is the point: a perfectly trusted page that is not indexed is invisible, and a perfectly indexed page that does not answer the query is a waste of trust.
