how do i add whatsapp to my website without a chat bubble

use a click-to-chat link. it is a normal url, it needs no plugin, no api and no app on your site, and it works on a phone and on a desktop:
https://wa.me/393491234567?text=ciao%2C%20vorrei%20un%20preventivo
the link, explained
wa.me is whatsapp's short domain. put the number in international format without plus signs, spaces or brackets: 39 for italy, then the number without the leading zero. the optional text parameter is the message the person will find already written — it must be url-encoded, which means spaces become %20 and commas become %2C.
put it behind a button that says what happens: "message us on whatsapp", not a green circle with a logo. and write the number on the page as text too, because some people will copy it, and some will call instead.
where it goes
one place that matters, usually the contact page, plus the footer if whatsapp is a real channel for your business. in wordpress it is a button block with the url; in wix, a button element with an external link; in html, an anchor with the right href.
please do not float a green bubble over the bottom right corner of every page on mobile. that is where the thumb rests and where your own call to action usually sits. a permanent overlay that covers the form is a chat button competing with the thing it was supposed to help.
the trade-offs nobody mentions
whatsapp is meta. someone who taps the button leaves your site, and the conversation happens on a platform that reads its own terms. if you track conversions, the click is the last thing you will see.
the number becomes public, which means people will message it at 23:40 and expect an answer. whatsapp business helps: a profile, an away message, quick replies, a catalogue. it does not create the obligation to be available, but it sets the expectation you then have to meet.
also check the privacy note on the contact page: if the form sends data to whatsapp, say so, in one line, in plain words.
faq
do i need whatsapp business for a link?
no. the click-to-chat link works with any number. the business app adds a profile, labels and automatic replies, which is what makes the channel manageable.
will the button slow down my site?
not if it is a plain link. the official whatsapp widget loads an external script and an iframe; a plain anchor costs nothing.
should the prefilled message be in italian?
yes, if your customers are italian, and keep it short: "ciao, vorrei informazioni su...". it lowers the effort of the first message, which is the whole point.
