your data is not on the internet. it is on someone else's computer.

the phrase "the cloud" is doing an enormous amount of marketing work. what it actually means is: a computer, in a building, owned by a company, that you do not control.

that is not automatically bad. the alternative for most people is worse. but it is worth being clear about what you are actually renting.

  • you do not have the data, you have a view of it
  • you do not have the server, you have an agreement about the server
  • the interface is designed to make the distinction invisible

what changed my mind on this was shipping a guestbook. i wrote thirty lines of code and suddenly had to answer real questions: where does this row actually live, what happens if the project is deleted tomorrow, who can read it, and what do i tell people who ask me to delete something.

what i actually did

  • moved the database to something i could reason about
  • kept the data model simple enough that i could export it in one command
  • made the export path a real feature, not an escape hatch nobody tested
  • stopped pretending the abstraction was free

sovereignty is not paranoia. it is just knowing where your files are.
